On Saturday 6th September there is unlimited free travel for everyone on the buses running between Monmouth and Chepstow in the Lower Wye Valley, via Tintern (Bus No 69) and Trellech (Bus No 65). It’s a great opportunity to have a free day out in the Wye Valley with the kids. Here are two ideas to try out which won’t cost you a penny if you pack a picnic!
Take the Number 69 bus from either Monmouth or Chepstow and alight at Old Station Tintern. The bus stops right outside the entrance and it’s a two minute walk down to the old station buildings which include an old signal box and a railway carriage to explore. Kids can enjoy the play area and a 30 metre aerial zip slide. There is an outdoor ping-pong table (bring your own ball and bats) and a chess board, plus blackboards and chalk to create outdoor art. There are picnic tables, a willow arch and lovely riverside meadows to wander along on a one mile riverside circular walk, before visiting the Circle of Legends sculptures – all for free! The littlest ones love finding out about Ostin, the Old Station Dormouse, in an Explore and Create family activity pack, full of ideas for exploring the site.
Opening times
The car park & grounds are open daily 9am – 5pm throughout the year.
Tea room, carriages & toilets open Tuesdays – Sundays 10am – 4pm (closed Monday except Bank Holidays).

Hop on the Number 65 Bus which runs from Monmouth and Chepstow through the village of The Narth. Hop off the bus at the Narth Village Hall stop, which is directly opposite The Narth Glade in Manor Wood, a lovely clearing in the woods with a children’s play area, large grassy area for games and picnic tables. From here you can take a short waymarked walk beside the beautiful Manor Brook which children love and enjoy a picnic in The Glade afterwards.
