Ffermio Bro

Welcome to Ffermio Bro, a Welsh Government programme running until March 2028, bringing together farmers and landowners to create positive environmental change within the Wye Valley National Landscape, building resilient ecosystems and supporting sustainable farming practices.

Working together, we aim to:

• Support nature recovery and ecosystem resilience
• Deliver activities spanning multiple farms to achieve common environmental goals
• Enhance farm business sustainability and resilience
• Create opportunities for public engagement with our landscapes and cultural heritage

Ffermio Bro is a collaborative programme which can fund activities spanning multiple farms to create landscape-scale impact.

Thematic Collaboration – Farms across the National Landscape working toward shared goals, without requiring formal cluster arrangements.

Catchment Collaboration – Farmers along rivers or streams undertaking coordinated actions to improve water quality.

Local Collaboration – Projects where farmers work together on Common land or connect habitats throughout the landscape.

Our Focus Areas

• Fresh Water Management: Enhancing catchment resilience, water quality, and creating wetland habitats
• Regenerative Farming:       Supporting practices that improve soil health and biodiversity
• Species Conservation:       Protecting key species through targeted habitat management

Eligible Activities

The programme funds activities across the Welsh Government’s Sustainable Land Management (SLM) objectives, with a focus on projects which meet SLM Objective 3 ‘To maintain and enhance the resilience of ecosystems and the benefit they provide’ including:

• Low density targeted tree planting and woodland restoration
• Natural regeneration and hedgerow creation
• Hedgerow restoration through hedge laying coppicing and gapping up.
• Invasive Non-Native Species (INNS) removal
• Natural flood risk management interventions
• Wetland and riparian habitat enhancement
• Restoring traditional hay meadows, and creating wild bird, wildlife and pollinator strips and plots.
• Improving access to the countryside through upgrading/enhancing public paths, open access land and green spaces.
• Targeted measures to support the recovery of the wildlife species and habitats.
• Targeted measures to improve water quality such as stock control.

This is a farmer-led scheme and we welcome all ideas for improving habitats and nurturing wildlife. The above are examples and not a comprehensive list.
